Photography: The Way I See It by Kent Crawford

Kent Crawford is a retired Maquoketa music teacher now able to spend more time with a hobby he has always enjoyed – PHOTOGRAPHY!

Kent was the Director of Bands at Maquoketa High School for 43 years. He previously taught the fifth and sixth-grade bands and the Maquoketa Junior High School band.  Kent is a graduate of Iowa State University with a Bachelor of Music degree.  He also has completed advanced music studies at the University of Iowa, Iowa State University, the University of Minnesota, Northwestern University, and VanderCook College of Music in Chicago. Kent also has taught brass instruments with the Dubuque Youth Organization Colt Cadets, a Drum and Bugle Corps.

Now retired, Kent enjoys an active life with many varied interests. He still maintains his interest in teaching and is a part-time brass instructor for the Colt Cadets Drum and Bugle Corp and helps area music programs as a clinician. He enjoys the outdoors and hiking which has taken him to many of our national parks with, of course, camera in hand. He is a member of The Friends of the Maquoketa Caves volunteering to help maintain the park. He also enjoys that new sport – Pickleball – and has shared his interest by volunteering to teach beginners classes at the local YMCA.  He is a board member of the Maquoketa High School Hall of Fame.  He also has an interest in woodworking and makes his own frames for the pictures he takes – which brings us to photography.

Photography has always been an interest to Kent. He has volunteered his interest in photography to shoot pictures for various organizations in need of a photographer. He has shot pictures for the Maquoketa News Paper, has been the event photographer for the Virdi Eye Clinic Golf Charity, and has helped out with various charity organizations in town that need a photographer. But aside from the volunteer aspect – he just enjoys playing with cameras. His subjects are varied and he takes pictures for the fun of it. Action pictures of sporting events, nature pictures from single flowers to landscapes, photography of people, especially his granddaughter, plus everything in between. He enjoys processing the pictures and then sending them off to be printed. Once the pictures are back, he mats the pictures and then cuts, stains, and finishes his frames for each one.

For those interested in the technical side of the hobby, Kent currently uses two camera systems depending on the subject – a Nikon D500 DSLR, and Fuji mirrorless cameras, the X-T30 and the X-T4. The processing software is primarily Capture One, switching from Lightroom to Capture One with using Fuji cameras, and just a bit of Photoshop when the occasion calls for it. These are all part of a passion that is a lifelong interest in the arts.

An Artists Reception will be held July 7th from 5 to 7 pm.
