When I hold a paintbrush in my hand\, I have a true\, quiet joy in my heart.  It’s a feeling akin to meditation: comfort\, peace\, confidence in my place in the world and wonder at the beauty in it. \nI was born and raised in Dubuque\, IA.\, worked as a mail carrier for 33 years and retired in 2013.  After taking painting lessons at our local art museum I considered it a lovely way to spend my time but in the past eight years things have changed for me! \nI took online lessons\, participated in Workshops and completed a Mastermind Mentorship Program with a wonderful teacher who really jumpstarted my vision and put Art in a whole new light. I have a Goal to reach Mastery Level before I leave this world and I work hard to achieve this! \nMy work is hanging in our artist’s co-op called The Collective in Elkader\, IA\, Galena Center For The Arts\, Pure Roots Gallery\, Dubuque Golf And Country Club\, and\, recently\, at Fritz And Frites Bistro in Galena\, IL.  I have also sold paintings through local shows\, online\, and at our yearly “Bluff Strokes Paint Out”.  I am a member of PPODs (Plein Air Painters Of Dubuque); spending many hours painting outdoors on site. I also belong to Oil Painters Of America\, American Impressionist Society\, and Galena Center For The Arts. \nI was honored to have my artworks accepted into shows with National Oil And Acrylic Society \, American Artists Professional League\, Missouri Valley Impressionist Society\, Light Space And Time Online Art Gallery\, Curator’s Juried Art Competition\, Randy Higbee 6″ Squared Online Exhibition and many local shows. \nTeaching at Galena Arts And Recreation\, Bluff Strokes Art Center\, and Asbury Library has been a great addition to my learning. \nIn the past\, my work has been exhibited at Carnegie Stout Public Library\, The Art Factory\, Adler Theater\, Weyland Gallery\, Bisignana Art Gallery\, Maquoketa Art Experience\, Art Domestique Gallery\, Sanford Museum\, Smokestack Art Gallery\, Maquoketa Brewing\, Riverview Hope And Healing Gallery\, The Left Bank\, Monroe Hospital Gallery\, and was part of the Iowa Artists Traveling Art Show in 2022 and Art Hop in 2023. \nAwards:\n2025 Bloomsbury Farms Paint Out/ DKW Gallery – First Place\n2024 LightSpaceTime 14th All Women Art Exhibition – 8th Place Overall\, 4th Place Paint Division for “Spectrum Of Colors”\n2024 LightSpaceTime 14th All Women Art Exhibition – Special Merit for “Beauteous”\n2024 LightSpaceTime 14th All Women Art Exhibition – Special Recognition for “Behind the Ballfield”\n2024 LightSpaceTime 14th Annual “Landscape” Art Exhibition – Honorable Mention\n2024 LightSpaceTime 14th Annual “Landscapes” Art Exhibition – Special Recognition\n2023 Iowa Artist Regional Show – Second Place\n2023 LightSpaceTime 13th Botanicals Exhibition – Special Merit and Special Recognition\n2022 Bluff Strokes Paint Out – Second Place “Outside the Box”\n2022 Missouri Valley Impressionist Society Associate Show – Third Place\n2021 Published Painting in Artist Magazine\n2021 Iowa Artists’ 50th Anniversary competition – Second Place\n2021 Iowa Artists’ Region 8 Show – Second Place + two Honorable Mentions\n2021 API Curator’s Juried Competition – Third Place\n2021 NOAPS Associates Online Exhibition\n2020 Art Domestique Small Works Show – First Place\n2020 September Boldbrush Contest – Fav 15\n2016 Bluff Strokes Paint Out Quick Paint- Third place

SUMMARY:June 13-21\, 2026 | Woodcarver & Pyrographer | Marie McDonough
DESCRIPTION:Marie McDonough’s woodcarvings will be on display at Maquoketa Art Experience (MAE) from June 13th through 21st. A reception will be held at MAE on Wednesday\, June 17th from 5:30 to 7:30 pm. MAE is always free and open to the public. Please join us to view Marie’s detailed carvings and to enjoy hearing from her at the reception.\n                    \n  \nAbout Marie McDonough: \nMarie McDonough is a dedicated woodcarver and pyrographer whose artistic journey began in the 1980s. She learned the fundamentals of woodcarving while working alongside a master carver for six months—a formative path\, teaching herself new techniques and developing a style that reflects her independent\, “bullheaded” spirit. Marie has never been one for formal classes; she prefers to experiment\, explore\, and discover her own way forward. \nMost of her work and her passion is wildlife\, but she is always up for a good challenge. She says one of her most difficult carvings was the commission of a cervical spine for her Chiropractor. \nShe has been involved with Wood Carvers Congress for over 10 years\, including president for a few years. She has competed and won several ribbons with her wildlife carvings. \nThis year she is proud to be part of the instructors teaching at Congress. She will be teaching Pyrography in a 2-day and a 3-day class. \nAlthough she doesn’t enjoy taking classes\, Marie loves teaching them. Her approach centers on encouraging students to embrace their own creativity and originality. She provides guidance\, technique\, and support while allowing each person’s unique vision to shine through. Her goal is always the same: to help every student create a finished piece that feels personal\, meaningful\, and unmistakably theirs.

SUMMARY:July & August 2026 | Bottom of the Driftless | Photography by Phil Roeder
DESCRIPTION:Phil Roeder’s photography will be on display in the South Gallery at Maquoketa Art Experience during the months of July and August\, 2026.  \nThe public is invited to an Artists’ Reception on Friday\, July 10th from 5 to 7 pm.  Please join us and meet Phil Roeder\, as well as Andrew Raeside.\nCentered on a place called Wayward Farms\, Bottom of the Driftless documents the rhythms of a family\nhomestead\, the framing of adjacent fields\, the character of nearby towns\, and the encroaching wildness of surrounding woods and bluffs. It is a meditation on place\, weaving together themes of land and belonging.\nThe Driftless region of the American Midwest was left largely untouched by the glaciers of the last Ice Age. Along its southern boundary\, the landscape begins to shift\, from rolling farmland and flat prairie to a terrain of limestone bluffs and undulating hills. Perched here\, a limestone farmhouse stands as both a witness to and an artifact of the region’s changing economics\, culture\, and politics. Constructed as the American Civil War was coming to an end — of materials formed during the Paleozoic era — it has been home to the same family for more than 150 years\, built of stones some 400 million years in the making. \nIn his essay Revolt Against the City\, painter Grant Wood — a champion of Midwestern regionalism and a son of Iowa — wrote: “I believe in the Middle West in spite of abundant knowledge of its faults.” The faults Wood identified nearly a century ago ranged from stereotypes about rural people to the region’s historic prejudices and a conservative nature often at odds with its own self-interest. And yet\, he believed\, hidden within was a culture of creativity\, enterprise\, and resilience. Bottom of the Driftless holds to that same belief\, embracing the particular beauty of this place: its contradictions\, its endurance\, and its quiet insistence on being seen. \n       \nAbout the Author: \nPhil Roeder came to photography late in life and\, thanks to a combination of good fortune and dumb luck\, his work has been exhibited around the country and published around the world. Phil’s work has appeared in publications such as National Geographic Traveler\, the New York Times\, the Washington Post\, Time\, Ad Age\, Vice\, National Journal\, Mother Jones\, the Atlantic\, NPR\, Wired\, Forbes\, Vice\, Berliner Zeitung\, Le Monde\, Roll Call\, US News and World Report\, and other news outlets. His work has also been included in photography publications such as OAI13 (France) and Contraluz (Spain)\, and in books published by Edizioni Nuova Cultura (Italy)\, Bloomsbury (UK)\, and Palgrave Macmillan (UK). He has several photographs available for licensing through Getty Images. In 2023 his work was included in the artist Shepard Fairey’s book “Weathered” and in 2024 one of Phil’s photographs was featured on a postage stamp issued by the U.S. Postal Service. \nPhil has worked for nearly 40 years in public relations and communications\, primarily in and around the public sector\, most recently as director of communications for Des Moines Public Schools. Phil earned his BFA in photography from Arizona State University and completes an MA in photography from Falmouth University in August 2025. The images in this document were created as part of his Master’s degree work.

SUMMARY:July & August 2026 | Abstract Art of Andrew Raeside
DESCRIPTION:Andrew Raeside’s artwork will be on display at Maquoketa Art Experience during the months of July and August\, 2026. \nThe public is invited to an Artists’ Reception on Friday\, July 10th from 5 to 7 pm.  Please join us and meet Andrew Raeside Roeder\, as well as Phil Roeder.\n \nANDREW RAESIDE BIOGRAPHY AND ARTIST STATEMENT \n \n It hit me in an instant to become an artist at the age of 12. I remember the moment like yesterday. A sudden spiritual rebirth and everything had changed. I have been working on that project ever since.  \nI attended the University of Northern Iowa and received a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in Painting in 1980. I worked with disabled adults for a time in Dubuque IA. Then I relocated to New England where I taught Art and Music in a residential grade school for children with emotional and behavioral disorders now called Spaulding Academy. While working there I attended Plymouth State University and received a Master of Arts in Teaching.  \nI worked at Spaulding Academy for 27 years until I retired and returned to Dubuque to focus again on painting and become a member of the artist community in Eastern IA. My main focus in the arts has been the Expressionist and Abstract Expressionist approaches. \nMy current objective is to use abstract art to celebrate what connects us all together. The New York School of Abstract expressionists is my primary influence. They spoke about a collective unconscious\, a concept held by psychologist Carl Jung. But it is not necessary to believe in anything magical to understand that we are all connected because we all have shared experiences. And we all respond emotionally to our experiences. When we look at a painting\, we respond emotionally to what we are seeing. Even if the painting is completely abstract and makes no reference to anything in the physical world. We may not be conscious of our reaction but if we are paying attention\, it is there. My wish is to make paintings that celebrate these emotional interconnections between us.

SUMMARY:September & October 2026 | Vox Obscura: From the Shadows | Artwork of Forrest Grey and Nolan Smith
DESCRIPTION:Two Maquoketa artists\, Forrest Grey and Nolan Smith\, have joined forces to present art from the spookier side of life. Their artwork will be on display at Maquoketa Art Experience during September and October 2026. Vox Obscura gives a voice to some of the oddities we normally conceal. These artists were inspired by musings of humanity\, afflictions\, symbolism and surrealism.\nForrest and Nolan have an affinity for the spooky\, celebrating their marriage on Halloween Day.  Both artists are self taught. Nolan will primarily display charcoal and colored pencil pieces. Forrest will focus on oil pastel\, graphite\, and other materials.\nWhen you find shadows\, you can also find light.  Join us for an experience amongst shadows and the light that casts them.\nAlso Featuring art from the DAAC.  The Dubuque Area Arts Collective (DAAC) is a 501c3 Non Profit Organization whose mission is to provide opportunities for growth and development for new and emerging artists of all media in Dubuque\, Iowa and the surrounding communities.\nPlan to join us for an Artists’ Reception on Saturday\, September 12th from 5-7 pm

SUMMARY:March & April\, 2027 | Once Upon a Time | Jamie Elizabeth Hudrlik
DESCRIPTION:You’re invited to view Jamie Hudrlik’s amazing artwork during the months of March and April\, 2027. \n             \nJamie Elizabeth Hudrlik’s work unfolds across large-scale\, unstretched canvases—like unbound storybooks suspended on the wall. Her paintings explore the emotional connections between female figures and their environments\, using color\, pattern\, and symbolism to reflect on identity\, growth\, love\, and loss. \nDrawing from personal memory\, imagination\, and the rhythms of the natural world\, Hudrlik creates immersive spaces where figures drift between inner and outer landscapes\, blurring the boundary between childhood and adulthood. Influenced by children’s book illustration\, she transforms this visual language into poetic\, emotionally resonant compositions through a mixed-media approach that includes acrylic\, graphite\, oil crayon\, stamps\, and stencils. \nRaised in small-town Iowa\, Hudrlik studied illustration and painting at the School of Visual Arts in New York before earning a BFA in Painting from Columbia College Chicago in 2004. While there\, she received a studio residency and the Weisman Grant\, supporting the completion of The Alphabet Series\, a body of twenty-six large-scale paintings that established her signature style. \nHudrlik’s recent exhibitions include solo presentations at Artifactory\, Iowa City (2026) and PS1\, Iowa City (2024)\, as well as Double Vision\, a two-person exhibition with her mother at Voices Studio\, Dubuque (2025). She also participated in the Fall Gallery Walk at The James\, Iowa City (2025). \nShe currently lives and works in Iowa City\, where she maintains a studio at PS1 Close House. Her work is also on view at Wonderland\, a vintage and décor shop she co-founded\, extending her artistic vision into a space where art\, memory\, and material culture intersect. \n  \nEducation \nColumbia College Chicago: Chicago\, IL. 2002- May 2004 B.F.A Art and Design  \nThe School of Visual Arts: NYC\, NY. 2000-2001 Fine Art and Children’s Illustration \nUniversity of Iowa: Iowa City\, IA. 1999-2000 Fine Art \nCornell College: Mt. SUMMARY:May & June 2027 | Pastel Seasons of the Heartland | Tom Christopher
DESCRIPTION:Iowa landscape artist\, Tom Christopher\, will have his art on display in both galleries at Maquoketa Art Experience during the months of May and June 2027. \n \n  \nArtist Statement – Bio \n \nLiving in the Midwest has influenced my style of painting and choice of subject matter significantly. Many of my pieces depict very common scenes I have experienced.  As a child\, I spent countless hours playing on the riverbanks and wooded areas in Central Iowa. Even today\, I continue to be intrigued with nature and the way sunlight and shadows help define the landscape. I continue to spend my mornings  hiking and sketching the rugged landscape along the Iowa River near my home.  My goal is to paint relatively common scenes in a more dramatic and interesting way. Most of my finished works are the result of  reference photographs and on-location (plein-air) studies. \nI have worked primarily in pastels and oil paints.  I plan to continue to explore these two mediums and look forward to many more years of painting and conducting workshops. \nTom Christopher is a Signature Member of the Pastel Society of America (PSA) and \n Master Circle\,  International Association of Pastel Societies. SUMMARY:July & August\, 2027 | Surreal Exhibit | James Henry
DESCRIPTION:James Henry’s work will be displayed in the Osterhaus Gallery at Maquoketa Art Experience during July and August 2027.\n                  \nJames Walker Henry (born 1961) – An American surrealist painter living in Burlington \, Iowa\, Heartland of the U.S. For more than 40 years\, Henry has created over 2\,000 pieces of art addressing social and political issues through his paint and brush. His works are symbolic and metaphoric\, dealing with items and issues that have effected many people through out time. When starting a piece of art\, his vision is broken down into items and ideas\, hoping this can help the viewer understand the reasoning of the painting. Some people have felt his art as being beautiful and inspiring\, while others may feel it as being somewhat harsh and disturbing. The viewer attending a James Walker Henry exhibit \, like it or not\, will always remember his works of art. \nSELECTED CHRONOLOGY/ Exhibitions and Awards \n Awards – \nBest of Show – Red Horse Gallery – Taft \,Ca. \nBest of Show – Louisa Art Show – Morning Sun\, Ia. \nFirst Place – Simple Twist of Fate Gallery – W. SUMMARY:July & August\, 2027 | Abstract Exhibit | John Carlson
DESCRIPTION:Burlington\, IA artist\, John Carlson\, will have his abstract art on display during July and August\, 2027 in the South Gallery at Maquoketa Art Experience.\n         \nIn each painting I find the starting point for the next one and the ability to grow my ideas. Starting with spontaneous thumbnail drawings\, I enlarge the roughs and add a liberal dose of color. These paintings for me\, are a snapshot of my life at the inception of the works. They are a voice I use to communicate. They are my opportunity to be physically silent and shout at the same time.   \nThe Burlington artist’s style is abstract\, expressionist\, and uniquely his. “I think I’ve only ever painted in this style. I started in high school and then kind of put it away. Eventually I came back to it\,” Carlson. As the artist gets older and is exhibiting his work more\, he is carving out more time to paint. Most of his works of art take three or four weeks to complete. While a lot of art has social or political meaning\, that’s not what Carlson is expressing. “For me I think it’s a way to express my personal feelings\, to try to get it out there. I’m kind of a shy person\, this might be my only outlet\,” Carlson said. His paintings are also imbued with his sense of humor\, he said. \nCarlson resides in Burlington\, Iowa\, graduating from Marycrest College in 1990 with a Bachelor of Arts in Computer Graphics. He has exhibited throughout Iowa and Illinois\, in one person\, group and invitational shows. He has received First Place awards for his paintings in Keokuk\, Iowa and Galesburg\, Ill. and a special award at an Iowa Artists Exhibition.

SUMMARY:Sept. & Oct.\, 2027 | Fiber & Mixed Media Art | Lori Miller
DESCRIPTION:Fiber and mixed media artist\, Lori Miller\, will have her artwork on display during September and October\, 2027.\n              \nLori Miller was born and raised in the Quad City area of Iowa and Illinois on the Mississippi.  A graduate of Marycrest College in Davenport\, Iowa\, Miller has developed her unique style and is largely self-taught.  Working in this media for over twenty-six years\, she continues to explore new techniques. Currently\, her work incorporates fabric and metal\, rock or other found objects. Many of these mosaic compositions feature an interpretation of geological shapes and relationships. These abstract works capture the beauty found in natural formations and the effect of natural phenomena or man-created residue. \n “Why fabric?  I embrace the variety fabric provides in color\, texture and form. Just like a traditional painter\, I work with my medium to explore subjects and communicate ideas. Fiber offers texture to a work and adds an exciting dimension.  Over the last several years\, I have been fascinated with incorporating even more texture to my work by using repurposed materials – junk I may find on the ground or perhaps a beautiful minutia of nature. \n Years ago\, I combined my love of fabric with my experience in creating stained glass work. I created my mosaic style by taking a subject and drawing out each individual mosaic to develop a pattern.  As I matured with that process\, I moved to working organically without a precise drawing\, instead cutting each piece as I develop the work. Time-consuming\, but the final work is highly detailed and allows me more painterly options in shadowing\, texture and form.” \n
