DESCRIPTION:The talents of your friends and neighbors will be showcased at a Coffeehouse from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on April 30.\nThe Coffeehouse will include readings and instrumental and vocal performances. Talent ranges from middle school students to senior citizens.\nOpen to the public!\nEnjoy complimentary coffee and desserts!\nThe event is free\, but MAE will be accepting donations for the Maquoketa Community Cupboard\, which can use peanut butter\, tuna\, and other high-nutrition\, nonperishable items\, as well as shampoo\, soap\, and other hygiene products.\nThe program is a continuation of the ongoing Layers of Maquoketa community-building project that launched in 2017.\nThe Coffeehouse is sponsored by the Maquoketa Art Experience\, the Maquoketa Sentinel-Press\, Layers of Maquoketa\, and the University of Iowa\, whose Office of Outreach and Engagement was instrumental in launching the Layers project.

DESCRIPTION:Join us on Wednesday\, March 11th to hear a brass quintet from Northwestern University. \nBrass Revived is a Chicago-based brass quintet formed at Northwestern University. The ensemble—Sophie Urban\, Paul Stancampiano\, Erin Harrigan\, Ellie Abbott\, and Chrisjovan Masso—brings together five graduate brass instrumentalists currently pursuing Master of Music degrees in music performance. \nThree members of the quintet perform with the Civic Orchestra of Chicago\, the prestigious pre-professional training orchestra affiliated with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Individually\, the musicians have appeared in leading orchestras and festivals across the United States\, as well as in Europe. \nUnited by a shared commitment to artistry and connection\, Brass Revived blends technical excellence with engaging programming. Their performances feature a vibrant mix of traditional brass quintet repertoire alongside familiar favorites\, creating concerts that are both refined and inviting for audiences of all backgrounds. \nThis performance is free and open to the public. Schwalm Professor Emeritus\, History and Gender\, Women’s\, and Sexuality Studies\, University of Iowa. \n \nLeslie Schwalm is a retired historian who taught for more than 30 years at the University of Iowa in the History and Gender\, Women’s\, and Sexuality Studies departments.  Her scholarship has focused on the Civil War era and its aftermath\, especially for Black Americans.  Her second book\, Emancipation’s Diaspora: Race and Reconstruction in the Upper Midwest\, unveiled the history of slavery and the consequences of emancipation in Iowa\, Minnesota\, and Wisconsin.   In working on this book\, she found extensive evidence of Black women and men building vibrant midwestern communities while challenging the laws and practices of racial discrimination—one of the themes she will touch on today. SUMMARY:Jovial Synergy Spring Performance
DESCRIPTION:Click here to see full size image\nJOVIAL SYNERGY is a woodwind ensemble based in the Quad Cities. Everyone in the group is also a member of the Bettendorf Community Band. Not only is it a shining example of how music is a lifelong treasure for people of all ages\, but it is unique in that it is a small instrumental group rather than the more common large community band. The repertoire of Jovial Synergy is varied\, and includes anything that is rewarding to play. The members include:\nChristina Ketelsen (oboe) – Christina transitioned from clarinet to oboe in 8th grade\, and played throughout high school and college. She previously played in the Greater Des Moines Community Band and is a member of the Bettendorf Community Band. As an attorney\, she is currently a contract negotiator for research at Purdue University.\nAllison Zager (clarinet/founder) – Allison has been playing the clarinet since she was in primary school. She is working in the area of medical billing\, and has a master’s degree in Applied Behavior Analysis.\nJanet Dudley (clarinet) – Music has truly been a life-long avocation for Janet. She has participated in music groups for many years\, and has played clarinet in the Bettendorf Community Band and the Bob Gaston CASI New Horizons band. More recently she has played with the Quad Cities Big Top Circus Band\, and the Deutsche Polka Band. Janet has also sung in the choir and played in the bell choir at Trinity Episcopal Church.\nSteve Sinner (bass clarinet) – Steve switched from clarinet to bass clarinet at Mason City High School in 1958. He is the sole remaining charter member of the Bettendorf Community Band\, and plays in five musical groups\, including the Quad City Wind Ensemble. His wood art has received international recognition. He also manufactures and sells specialized woodturning tools.\nDianne Schalk (alto saxophone) – Dianne is a retired IT audit supervisor. She has played saxophone since 5th grade. In addition to Jovial Synergy\, she plays in the Quad City Wind Ensemble\, the Black Hawk Community Band\, the Bettendorf Community Band\, and the CASI New Horizons Band.\nJanice Gibbs (bassoon) – Janice is a Retired IT analyst\, and is now the volunteer coordinator for the annual Festival of Trees. She has been playing bassoon for 56 years. She also enjoys playing in the CASI New Horizons Band.\nJay Kahn (flute & clarinet) – Jay recently retired after 46 years of teaching band\, 43 at Maquoketa Middle School. A firm believer in “music for life\,” Jay is the Iowa regional membership coordinator for the Association of Concert Bands (an organization devoted to the promotion of community and municipal bands)\, and is a trustee on the board of Windjammers Unlimited (an organization devoted to the preservation of traditional circus music). Jay also directs Maquoketa’s Timber City Band\, and also the Quad Cities Big Top Circus Band.

SUMMARY:Singing for Sanity! A community song circle for joy and connection
DESCRIPTION:Do you need a feel-good\, self-care break with your community? Come take a pause and de-stress for an afternoon participatory workshop with songleader Lyndsey Scott. All ages + all voices welcome! — you definitely don’t have to “be a singer” to reap the profound physiological benefits of deep breath + relaxation that community singing generates. (i.e. If you like to sing in the car or in the shower — you’re a perfect candidate!) We will do some simple warm-ups and then we will learn and sing simple songs with uplifting themes\, taught “call and echo” on the spot. You’ll leave with your cup filled up and feeling lighter!\nLyndsey Scott is the 2024-25 Grant Wood Fellow in the University of Iowa School of Music where she teaches “Community Singing as Collective Power.” In her practice as a multimedia artist\, songleader\, and ritualist\, she explores community singing as a technology of belonging and strategy for liberation and transformation.
