SUMMARY:A World In-Between: A Discussion with Grant Wood Art Colony Fellow Junli Song
DESCRIPTION:U OF I ENGAGEMENT AND THE ARTS\n  \nArtist Junli Song will discuss her art practice which revolves around world-building\, storytelling\, and research. She creates work across various media from printmaking to installation to invent and explore personal mythologies informed by a feminist diasporic perspective. Centering around a female re-imagining of an ancient Chinese headless deity\, the world created within her work exists as an imaginary realm where the liminal becomes a space of alternative existence. \nArtist’s Bio:  \nJunli Song grew up in Chicago\, but lived abroad from 2012-2018 in South Korea\, England\, Italy\, and South Africa. Her studies are similarly widespread: she originally majored in economics and international development at the University of Chicago and the University of Oxford\, respectively\, before returning to the creative path. She completed her MFA at the University of Arkansas with a concentration in printmaking\, and is currently the Grant Wood fellow in printmaking and visiting professor at the University of Iowa. As an artist and storyteller\, she works across a range of media from printmaking and painting to sculpture and animation to explore imagined worlds and personal mythologies. \nWEBSITE \n\nFree and open to the public – Donations appreciated

SUMMARY:My Story\, My Voice (as revealed through geneology)
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by MAE and The Maquoketa Public Library\n\nDon’t Miss this Extraordinary Story \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFree and open to the Public | 124 S Main\n\n\n\n      \n\n\n\n\n\nMy name is Kim Carr and even though I was born and raised in Iowa\, I have a personal connection with Kalaupapa. My maternal grandmother was forced to live there\, having to say goodbye to not only her parents and siblings but also her husband and two children. The oldest child is my mother. \nOn January 6\, 1866\, nine men and three women were forcibly sent to the Kalaupapa Peninsula on the island of Molokai\, Hawaii. They were sent there to live out the rest of their lives because\, through no fault of their own\, they were infected with a disease that at that time had no cure. Those 12 were the first of the 8\,000+ people who would call Kalaupapa their home\, with just a few still currently living there. \nThe disease is Hansen’s Disease\, which prior to 1873 was called Leprosy. Its prevalence in Hawaii was the reason so many people were sent to Kalaupapa. \nIn my presentation\, I will talk about the disease that afflicted so many people\, how they were treated by their families\, the general public\, and sadly\, the United States Government. I will also talk about how this population is now being honored and celebrated through art\, writing\, and music. My information comes from what I have found through research\, correspondence with people that have firsthand knowledge\, and the personal writings of my grandmother. \nIt is my hope that you will come to understand the pain and hardships this community endured\, and celebrate the resilience they possessed\, and how they redefined family.  \nMahalo\,\nKimberly Haunani Carr
