SUMMARY:The Art of Forrest Grey
DESCRIPTION:Maquoketa native\, Ms. Forrest Grey\, will have her artwork on display in the South Gallery at Maquoketa Art Experience the months of August and September\, 2024. \nThe Gallery is free and open to the public. Donations are welcome. \nArtist Reception: Saturday\, August 3 from 2-4 PM\nThe Artist Reception is free and open to the public.\nNo need to RSVP … please come and enjoy some light refreshments\, as well as the opportunity to meet Ms. Grey.\n \n  \nArtist’s Statement:\nA blank sheet of paper holds many possibilities.\nHello\, my name is Forrest Grey. I’m a self-taught artist from Iowa. Growing up without things\, you learn to create. Art is a way to soothe\, introspect\, and connect with others. I gravitate towards nature themes such as landscapes\, mountains\, and stormy seas.\nOther times you may see me trying to capture the chaos in surrealism. I aim to confront fears\, trauma\, and nightmares. In life\, we must remind ourselves that we learn from both the good and difficult times. It’s our choices that shape us.\nMy primary materials are oil pastels\, watercolors\, and pencils. I do love to experiment and try new methods and materials\, so you never know what may pop up! It is my dream to continue to create and give back locally and to the organizations close to my heart.

SUMMARY:Creativity Through Art and Music | Ryan Olsen
DESCRIPTION:View the intricate wood carvings of Idaho’s Ryan Olsen from June 10-15\, 2024 at Maquoketa Art Experience. Be sure to join Ryan on June 12th from 6:00 to 8:00 pm for an artist’s reception.\nAdmission is always free and open-to-the-public.\n                  \n  \nAbout Ryan Olsen: \n \nRyan first became interested in carving when he was very young. When he was only seven\, he had his very own pocket knife that he had found in the dirt and kept hidden from his parents. Ryan and the neighbor kids would sit in the shade during long summer days and carve bark that they pried off of the family pine tree. He began carving seriously while he was earning his master’s degree in opera at the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music.  Ryan carved on his own for the first five years or so.  His best tools were snap-off razor blades because “they always had a sharp point.”  After too many snap-off accidents\, he upgraded to Xacto knives and ground-off steak knives.   \nOne of Ryan’s greatest experiences in carving was his first carving class at the Idaho Woodcarver’s rendezvous with one of his heroes and fellow CCA carver\, Cleve Taylor.  After studying with Cleve\, he caught on fire and his carving began to improve.  Since then\, he has studied with Dave Stetson\, Dave Dunham\, Phil and Vicki Bishop\, Pete Leclair\, Chris Hammack\, and repeatedly with Marv Kaisersatt.  Since then\, Ryan has won a number of competitions.  He has become known for his innovative\,  clean style and his ability to capture female subjects in wood. \nOne of Ryan’s greatest joys in woodcarving is participating in the Caricature Carvers of America. He loves meeting with fellow caricature carvers each year at different destinations around the country. Ryan serves as  the Chairman over the annual CCA Caricature Carving Competition in Converse\, Indiana.  \nHe stays busy running a high school choir program in Kuna\, Idaho.  Whenever he is able\, he travels the country to teach woodcarving seminars and attend woodcarving shows. His favorite venue to teach wood carving has become the International Wood Carver’s congress in Maquoketa\, Iowa. Ryan\, his wife\, and their four children\, live in Melba\, Idaho. \nHis philosophy on carving is “Good carving is just like good singing.  You have to work at it a little every day and you might as well learn from the best.

SUMMARY:Maquoketa Area Children's Choir Festival Performance
DESCRIPTION:  \n \nThe Maquoketa Area Children’s Choir Festival will perform on Wednesday\, April 10\, 2024\, at 5:00 PM at Maquoketa Art Experience\, 124 S. Main St\, Maquoketa. This Festival is an opportunity for fine younger (unchanged) voices in grades 4 – 7 from Maquoketa and surrounding schools to come together to sing a choral style of music. The students were selected by area music and choral educators. \nThis will be a chance for Jackson County to remember Helen Frank\, the county school’s music specialist who began the elementary choruses\, continuing them when teaching at Briggs Elementary School\, Maquoketa. \n\nThe Festival will be directed by Marnie Strome\, former Canadian Calgary Children’s Choir Artistic Director and Conductor. Strome is in her 3rd and final year at St. Brigid School in San Francisco\, before returning to Calgary next year. Strome is well-known in Canada\, and her choirs have toured both in Canada and the United States\, as well as Europe.  The Festival chairperson is Pamela Crawford and the co-chair is Nancy Kilburg.   \nAfter releasing during the day\, the public concert will begin at 5:00 PM. The festival choir will sing four selections. Special guests the Dubuque Hempstead Chamber Singers will perform three selections and join the festival choir for one more. The event is free and open to the public. Donations are appreciated. \nFormer Artistic Director – Marni Strome (B.F.A.\, B. Ed.\, M.M.\, A.R.C.T.) \nMarni Strome has worked with the Calgary Children’s Choir as a Music Director since its inception in 1988\, assuming the role of Artistic Director in 1993. In this role she oversees the entire choral program and directs the Children’s\, Youth\, and Adult choirs. Her enthusiasm and positive leadership allow her to create and foster choirs that combine a high level of artistry with a strong sense of community\, stewardship and fun. Marni has toured with the choir to numerous parts of Canada\, Carnegie Hall in New York\, Europe and Japan\, where they have performed and also taken part in festivals with internationally recognized conductors such as Henry Leck\, Dr. David Flood\, and Dr. Will Kesling. Her choirs have been award winners in local and provincial festivals\, where adjudicators often comment on the choir’s sense of ensemble and musical sensitivity. The impact of her musical leadership and mentorship is seen across the music scene in Calgary and beyond\, as former choristers have gone on to become professional singers\, voice teachers\, conductors and composers. In 2017 Calgary Children’s Choir proudly celebrated its 30th anniversary. \nBeyond the Calgary Children’s Choir program\, Marni Strome is active as a teacher\, conductor\, and clinician. She has taught music for 30 years in the public education system\, and has also led the choir of St. Giles Presbyterian Church for almost 20 years. \nHaving studied music formally from a young age\, Marni Strome brings a lifelong love of music\, singing and the choral art to her profession. Attesting to the diversity of her skills\, as a youth\, Marni also won provincial and national awards for composition. Mentors include her mother\, Marian Smith\, a prodigious piano player\, conductor and musician; Rosemarie Sherban (founder of the Calgary Children’s Choir)\, David Ferguson\, and Janos Horvath. Marni Strome received her bachelor’s degrees from the University of Calgary\, and completed her Masters in Music degree from Holy Names University in Oakland\, California\, specializing in Music Education with Kodaly Emphasis. Marni has taught Kodaly Levels courses at both University of Calgary\, and Silver Winds (Manitoba) summer programs. \nShe has studied choral conducting in numerous master class and summer seminar settings including Bulgaria\, Hungary\, Indianapolis\, and California. \nFor fun\, Marni enjoys spending time with her husband traveling\, bike riding\, reading\, and exploring neighborhood ice cream and coffee shops. \nMs. Strome now enjoys her teaching position in San Francisco CA as the general music teacher at. St. Brigit School\, where she also assists with the prestigious St Brigit’s Honor touring Choir (one of the St. Mary’s Cathedral Choirs) directed by Christoph Tietze. \nMarni Strome | St. Giles Presbyterian Church\nMarni Strome has worked with the Calgary Children’s Choir as a Music Director since its inception in 1988\, assuming the role of Artistic Director in 1993. \nFacebook · Calgary Children’s Choir · Mar 10\, 2022 \nThis special concert is called “The Family We Choose” and includes the singers of three of their performing choirs – Calgary Junior’s Choir\, Calgary Children’s Choir\, and Calgary Youth Choir. \nYouTube Calgary Children’s Choir  \nDilworth Performed by the Calgary Youth Choir and Calgary Children’s Choir Conducted by Artistic Director\, Marni Strome. \n

SUMMARY:UI Dance Company Presents Dances Described
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an interactive  program  of dance and  dialogue  with the UI Dance Company.  In their 2023-24 season the company has focused on  adaptability &  accessibility\,  resulting in an evening of four works. ”Winning” by Artistic Director Stephanie Miracle is a piece that playfully dips and dives\, forms and dissolves in questions of why we compete\, how we play games\, when teamwork works\, and what we are connected to.  Also presented on the bill  are new  works by guest Choreographer Aaron Samuel Davis\, and Prof. Christopher McMillian as well as a piece  reflecting on the process of embodying  Martha Graham’s iconic  Panorama. \n \nAll performances will include open and closed Audio Description. Friday’s performance will also include ASL interpretation.\nAudio Description (AD)\, a tool for making performing and visual arts more accessible\, is integrated into the performance.  UIDC has been learning to use Audio Description as a tool to describe live dance in order to connect and share with all audiences across our region. We are curious about how this process will challenge our current dance making practices and will allow us to work towards greater inclusion and accessibility in the studio and on the stage. \nAbout the UI Dance Company: Since 1984\, UIDC has been offering  students  an opportunity to present high caliber\, innovative  dance  performances to  audiences across Iowa  in a variety of settings. The UI Dance Company believes  dance can provoke awe\, inspire joy\, stimulate thought\, and create new perspectives. Our  mission is to create  meaningful connections with the community through the creation of new choreography for Space Place theater\, public touring engagements\, workshops\, lecture-demonstrations\, and site-specific interventions. \nArtistic Director - Stephanie Miracle\nAssistant Director - Sophia McLaughlin\nRehearsal Assistant/Audio Describer - Cami Rezabek\nCast - Madison Burkhart\, Jack Delaney\, Noah Fox\, Ruby Gentzler\, Amelia Fisher\, Enza Handzel\, Jemma Hoffman\, Allyson Meinders\, Emily Pyburn\, Allyson Radke\, Gracie Schultz\, Paige Waller\nGuest Choreographers - Aaron Samuel Davis\, Christopher McMillan\nGraham Rehearsal assistant - Katelyn Perez\nDigital Designers - Molly Costello and Mack Albert\nLighting Designer - Jim Albert\nCostume Designer - Margaret Wenk-Kuchlbauer \ndance.uiowa.edu

John taught me camera basics\, as well as how to develop and print photos. In those days we only shot in black and white\, something I continue to this day. In addition to working for Wartburg I began to shoot more artsy\, less-journalistic photos and was fortunate to have work published in publications like the Des Moines Register Sunday Magazine. I suppose it was during that time that I realized photography was an excellent medium for telling stories\, both as stand-alone photos and as photos accompanying written work. I am best known for my written work. \nMy first paid column was in 1970 when I was in high school\, a column that appeared in the Chicago Tribune. For more than 30 years my columns\, often accompanied by my photos\, have appeared regularly in the Chicago Tribune\, Chicago Sun-Times\, Baltimore Sun\, St. Louis Post-Dispatch\, Houston Chronicle\, Minneapolis Star-Tribune\, Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. The Iowan Magazine\, Des Moines Register\, Cedar Rapids Gazette\, Quad-City Times\, and Dubuque Telegraph Herald\, and others. In 2023 the Telegraph Herald will be publishing a 60-page ‘magazine’ of my columns and photos. All proceeds will benefit the Fund for Local Journalism. My photos alone have also been published in the Washington Post\, the Boston Globe\, and many other publications. \nWhat I do is classic “street photography\,” a form of art practiced for a long time by such luminaries as Robert Frank\, Vivian Maier\, Bruce Davison\, and many others\, all of whom have influenced my work. As a fan of the Iowa State Fair I proposed an idea for a photo book to the good folks at the University of Iowa Press and\, very quickly\, they responded favorably. They incorporated all of my suggestions. i.e. black & white photos\, format\, size\, number of essays. The only thing I was not allowed to choose? The cover photo! They loved the goat. The CEO/Manager of the fair\, Jeremy Parsons recently told me that “The Iowa State Fair” is a “wonderful book – incredible writing and stunning photos.”  \nThat sort of sentiment is why I’d like to make the photos available to as many in Iowa as possible. The fair is an important part of the history of the state and I believe I did a relatively decent job of bringing some of that history to life\, on a very personal level\, not just for me but for anyone who loves the fair. It’s a collection of snapshots that reveal oft-lost cultural and spiritual truths here in the heartland. In the end\, a state fair is about people\, people who participate and people who visit\, and I hope my photos appeal to both groups. It’s a ‘come with me\, take my hand\, let’s walk around and see what we can see’ approach to the art of photography.
