DESCRIPTION:Thomas Buchs Plein Art Exhibit\nExhibit July 2 to August 29\, 2002\nReception Date | Meet the Artist Reception-Sunday\, Jul 24\, 2022 2-4 pm\n \nARTIST’S BIO \nThomas attended Layton School of Art and became an Illustrator\, creating artwork for advertising and children’s books for many national and local companies during the last 46 years. During summers he exhibited at Art Fairs and also did Pastel Portraits. \nRecently Thomas has been doing Plein Air Painting ( painting from life outdoors).  Much of his current work is representative of this discipline. He tries to capture the light and atmosphere of a scene within a few hours. Thomas believes that a painting is not just a two dimensional illusion\, but also that of a moment in life\, captured by an artist on canvas. \nThomas is a founding member of the Wisconsin Plein Air Painters Association. The WIPAPA has been established as a state-wide fellowship of artists dedicated to promoting and practicing the traditional discipline of Plein Air painting. Members seek to honestly interpret the natural and man-made beauty and diversity of Wisconsin’s landscapes and culture. We will strive to enhance members’ skills and reputations by providing regular opportunities to paint outdoors together and critique our work and share our expertise with fellow artists in order to maintain the highest standards of the Plein Air tradition of painting. \nThomas states he has found that while doing a painting outdoors  he is  immersed in the moment\, later when he looks at the painting ” I can remember all the things that went on as I painted\, the weather\, the birds singing\, a small animal moving through the scene\, people who have stopped to talk to me.” The memories are all part of the painting.

DESCRIPTION:Josh Guge Exhibit June 12-17\, 2022\nCarver Reception:\nJune 15\, 2022 | 6-8 pm\nDemo by Joshua Guge\nWorld Champion Wood Sculptor\n                      \nAt the age of thirteen\, Joshua began his art career by selling his sculptures to art galleries. By the age of seventeen\, he began competing in numerous art competitions around the country where he has won many “best of show” honors. In 2000\, Joshua began working on a series of cast reproductions for the Danbury Mint. After graduating from Judson University in 2002 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Visual Communications\, he began his own wood sculpting company Guge Art\, Inc. He has also taught art at Westminster Christian School in Elgin\, Illinois. Josh continues to teach children and adults in his studio\, surrounding communities\, and around the country. \nIn 2004\, Josh and Bob Guge became co-founders of The Guge Institute and Art Studio. This studio is located in Elgin\, Illinois. Guge Institute classes include painting\, carving\, sculpting\, drawing\, airbrush\, design\, and more. \nJosh achieved one of his lifelong dreams in 2009\, by becoming a World Champion sculptor. He won world titles in both the life-size and miniature divisions at the World Fish Carving Championships. In 2011\, Josh became a three-time World Champion sculptor by winning the “Best in World” Lifesize Category at the World Fish Carving Championship. \nArtist’s Statement\nI am a 3rd generation wood sculptor born into a family of talented artists. At an early age I learned the art of wood sculpting from my father and grandfather. Roy Guge\, my grandfather\, started the family tradition by sculpting duck decoys for hunting. My father\, Bob became a full-time wildlife woodcarver\, a much sought-after teacher\, and a five-time World Champion sculptor. After years of apprenticing under my father’s instruction\, I developed my own style and love for wood sculpture. \nThis art form has captured my family because of its uniqueness. The wood sculpture incorporates drawing\, wood-carving\, 3-D design\, sculpting\, and painting. The challenge of this art form is mastering these different forms of art.\nMy sculptures range from primitive decoys to highly detailed realistic depictions. Each piece is carved with the use of high-speed power tools and wood burners. They are hand-painted or airbrushed original works of art. The materials I use are tupelo wood\, metals\, epoxy\, and acrylic paints. My sculptures feature a variety of diverse wildlife\, but my passion is for depicting tropical ocean fish and their habitat. \nToday I strive to create art that will inspire others. I try to capture the essence of wildlife in my work. My goal is to evoke a mood or emotion. I have a desire to communicate to my audience how God’s creation makes me feel. I want to express the emotion I experience when observing something beautiful in nature. With this form of art\, comes an intense love not only for creating but also a lifetime of studying the natural world around me. \nLike my father\, I have the desire to pass this art form on to others. In the past decade of my life\, I have taught hundreds of students all over the country from youth to seniors. I want to expose this unique art form to as many people as possible\, giving others the opportunity that I was fortunate enough to grow up with. Maybe someday I will accomplish my goal to see wood sculpture thrive in mainstream art. Until then\, I will keep creating and sharing my God-given gift to the next generation of artists.

Their artworks focus on the struggles\, joys\, and challenges of farm life. \n                       \nAmerican Pastoral\n26 paintings in soft pastel by Roberta Condon\nCondon’s modern abstract works shout out the stark landscape of the Wisconsin farms and fields\, presenting vibrant pastels in large contemporary splashes of line and color. \nSee her series in progress at RobertaCondon.com. \n\n\n\nEXHIBIT STATEMENT by Condon \nSeries: Agriculture All-Around—Agriculture Run Aground \nDairy farmers are facing a perfect storm of factors that have led to the loss of over two family farms a day: falling milk prices due to globalization\, political polarization\, industrialization\, efficiencies of scale unreachable by small farmers buried in rising debt\, and trade wars and tariffs to name a few. The state of Wisconsin has been a leader in the nation for total of Chapter 12 farm bankruptcies for the last ten years. Family farmers are being forced into extinction. \nI live and work in a small town in Wisconsin. I own and operate a gallery/studio on the main street and drive a school bus. My route winds through the rural farm areas that surround our town. Viewing the Wisconsin landscape is a privilege\, but there is a subtext of struggle that I can’t ignore. \nAs an artist\, I cannot focus on either the positive pure beauty of the Wisconsin rural landscape or the negative loss of small-town and rural lifestyles and vista. In this series\, I feature both\, and I believe it is my most important and accomplished work to date. \nIn my search to convey the beauty and strength of the farm landscape\, as well as the loss of a lifestyle\, I modeled my series of 26 pastel paintings on Maurice Sendik’s alphabet book\, Alligators All Around. Instead of Sendik’s alliterative phrases like “Bouncing Balls\,” or “Catching Colds\,” my titles juxtapose the factors facing today’s farmers: “Bucolic Bovines — Burgeoning Bankruptcies\,” Cowherd Charm — Climate Change.” Each painting is accompanied by a brief description to provide a primer into the factors behind the loss of small farms across the United States. \n\n\n\n          \nMom’s Reminiscences:\nPaintings in gouache by Lorraine Ortner-Blake \nOrtner-Blake presents a view of life on the farm through her mother’s reminiscences and the memories of her own childhood on the farm. The intimate paintings are worked in gouache with a primitive simplicity. The images speak in a warm whisper tracing strong connections within the family and to the farm. \nSee more of her series at LorraineOrtner-Blake.com. \nEXHIBIT STATEMENT by Ortner – Blake: Farming in the Midwest: A Woman’s Perspective \n\n\n\nMy series of paintings portray my mother’s enduring memories from 1900s farm culture: waking on a morning when one is finally old enough to wade through dewy fields to get the cows\, eavesdropping as an older sister times her contractions while playing cards with Mom at the kitchen table\, or getting a step-saver to move milk to the bulk tank. \nI learned early that when I was making art for the church I was exempt from chores. I was a Catholic farm girl and it still shows: I am moved by the symbolism of icons and the rural landscape. This translates into the way I now paint. \nI embrace a semi-realistic and primitive manner. I distort perspective\, overlap timelines\, and include objects of personal symbology. The paintings are small\, intimate\, done in gouache\, usually on cotton paper. For me\, gouache allows detail; its flat surface is easy to view\, friendly. Using gouache allows my paintings to tell stories. \nIconography helps us understand a saint’s life and character; in my paintings\, I hope to do the same. My goal is to expand an understanding of personal history\, compressing time\, reframing and finding the visual symbols for a new audience. \nI feel the truth of Aristotle’s idea: “The aim of art is to represent not the outward appearance of things\, but their inward significance.”

DESCRIPTION:Will Cundill Photography / Poetry Exhibit\nMarch 3 – April 28\, 2022\nReception and Presentation | March 6th\, 2:00 pm\n \nPamela Myatt Crawford and Laura Ann Myatt Helmers are the granddaughters of Charlotte Cundill Myatt\, the daughter of Will and Ella (Cassin) Cundill. Pam and Laurie are the two great-granddaughters of Will Cundill’s eight great-grandchildren. Due to the stories told\, literature\, poetry\, photography and a few family possessions preserved by their Aunt Laura Ann Myatt Schultz\, Pam and Laurie are able to present this exhibit and poetry reading honoring the life of Will Cundill\, Maquoketa photographer\, Poet laureate\, and Jackson County Hall of Fame member. \nMaquoketan Pamela Crawford has lived all save seventeen of her 70+ years in Maquoketa or on the home farm 10 miles SW of Maquoketa. She is a lifelong music educator\, teaching choral/vocal music for 34 years in Iowa public schools (21 at Maquoketa High School) and the past “retired” 15 years piecing together community college humanities instruction\, church music direction\, and teaching studio piano/voice lessons. Pamela earned her BS from ISU in Ames\, her MME from Drake University\, and further credits as a summer honors fellow at Northwestern University. Pam and her husband David collectively are blessed with daughters Angela and Karma Quick\, Kelli and Kristi Crawford\, AND eight grandchildren. \nMaquoketa area native Laurie (Myatt) Helmers became a Minnesotan in 1982\, and she lives on a horse acreage south of Rochester with her husband of 43 years\, John–a retired civil engineer.  Their son\, Myatt\, lives nearby and comes often to visit his horse!   She is a graduate of Hamilton Business College\, NIACC\, and WSU with a degree in health education.  Currently semi-retired\, Laurie teaches piano lessons\, plays the organ for church\, sings in chorale\, and is heavily involved in theatrical productions.  She enjoys travel\, trail riding\, playing scrabble\, and spending “sister” time with Pam.

DESCRIPTION:Iowa Artists Launches its 50th Anniversary Traveling Exhibit “Reboot”\n\n January – February 2022\nReception:  Saturday\, February 5th | 2-5 pm.\nOpen to the Public\n \n\nIowa Artists is a nonprofit group of over 200 artists located in 12 regions throughout Iowa.  Members work in acrylic\, oil\, watercolor\, charcoal\, colored pencil\, pastel\, pen and ink\, pencil\, and scratchboard for 2D art and glass\, wood\, fiber\, ceramic\, and metal in 3D art. Iowa Artists holds regional shows in the early spring with the top 10% of winners moving on to the State Show in May. Iowa Artists also sponsors workshops in the 12 regions in the fall. \nThe juried exhibit will feature 23 pieces of 2D and 3D artwork including three paintings\, which took the top-three awards at Iowa Artists’ 2021 State Online Show in May 2021. The top winning artists from the May show include: Barry Ross\, winning Best of Show with his watercolor “Lilienthal Glider;” Beppie Weiss\, winning the Richard Heggen Award for her oil painting\, “White on White;” and Robert Richardson winning the Doris Frandsen Award for “Old World Sparrows.” \n To learn more about Iowa Artists\, visit www.iowaartists.us.

DESCRIPTION:Tim Rees Exhibit – “Life Through the Lens: The Evolution of a Painter”\n               \n\n\n\n\n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nImmerse yourself in all the aspects of life\, filtered through the lens of an artist. From landscape to still life\, touching scenes of every day life to fleets of fancy\, Timothy Rees demonstrates his keen ability to reproduce the world in oil paint. By combining his highly developed realism with dynamic abstract mark making\, the paintings in this show bring a poetic note to the otherwise ordinary world around us. \nThis comprehensive exhibit features work from his entire 10 years of painting\, affording the viewer a glimpse into the evolution of the artist. It offers examples from his early career of impressionistic realism\, to an exploration of classical techniques\, to a body inspired by art nouveau\, to his current naturalistic work. In 2011 he joined the teaching staff at the P&C and began teaching workshops around the world. In 2012 he moved to Arizona and began teaching at the Scottsdale Artists’ School. In 2014 he launched The Academy at Scottsdale Artists’ School\, a two year accelerated classical training program. The program was moved to the Art Renewal Center accredited Rees Atelier in 2017\, where an additional full time program was added. In 2018 he launched two landmark comprehensive instructional video sets: the Classical Drawing Bundle and the Classical Painting Bundle\, covering in detail the atelier curriculum\, assignment demonstrations\, and core concepts with textbooks\, catalogs\, and 200 hours of video. He has won numerous awards\, including the P&C’s Gold Medal Exhibition People’s Choice Award\, Beaux Art’s People’s Choice award (three consecutive years)\, first place in Portrait Society of America’s members only competition\, and Art Renewal Center’s gallery award\, among others. He has also appeared in several publications\, including features in American Art Collector Magazine\, International Artist\, Southwest Art Magazine\, and Fine Art Connoisseur. He is represented by McLarry Fine Art in Santa Fe and Arcadia Contemporary in NYC. \nHe currently resides in Maquoketa\, IA where he has discontinued running an atelier in order to paint full time in his downtown studio.
