Artist’s Statement: I began painting over 60 years ago and quickly learned that simply recreating a figure or landscape photorealistic was not satisfying. I have always sought to go beyond the surface appearance and into that underlying unseen. The spark of life is to be found in this spiritual attitude.
I graduated from St. Ambrose College in Davenport, Iowa and studied painting with Daniel Greene in Chicago. I currently teach painting at the Figge Art Museum in Davenport, Iowa.
For me, painting is a search and a response. As long as I remain awake to the world and people around me, I can be more aware of my response. My work is the result of this search and response.
The reason I paint is best found in the painting. The emotion is expressed with the brush. I love the spontaneity of seeing brushwork on the canvas and knowing that moment in time will remain unchanged.
